The Mill was built around 1860 and its principal purpose was to grind corn by water power. A holding pond was dug to the East of the Mill feeding an underground tunnel 4 metres deep to a second pond in the valley to the West with a semi-subterranean wheelhouse. Inside a water wheel, constructed in Wadebridge, powered a 50mm diameter steel shaft, which routed back to the Mill, in turn driving a belt and pulley arrangement to the Mill equipment. The ponds remain but the wheelhouse has unfortunately collapsed and is inaccessible on adjacent farmland. The Mill was latterly part of a farm unit until the late 1980’s.

However, the Mill itself now enjoys a new lease of life as a splendid base for holiday cottages. The Mill is owned by a family-run business, Henry J Clare Limited, which has been in existence since 1900. The two directors, Jane and Richard Jenkins, understand it is important when booking a holiday that you are assured of their integrity. They reside at Hawksland Mill and have maintained and managed the cottages for the past fifteen years, ensuring personal attention. Richard is a Chartered Surveyor (MRICS), a Corporate Building Surveyor (MASI) and Chartered Builder (MCIOB).
